In the words of John F. Kennedy “Children are the world’s most valuable resource and its best hope for the future.” To enrich the lives of children and provide them the opportunity for future success is a vital mission and one that Piedmont United Way supports through the Skyline CAP Head Start program.
Skyline Community Action Program (CAP) administers the Head Start Program in Madison and Rappahannock Counties. In Madison County, forty children are served in two classrooms located at Madison County Primary School. In Rappahannock County, eighteen children are served through our collaboration with the Child Care and Learning Center in Little Washington.
Head Start is a family-oriented child development program that is offered at no cost to three and four-year-old children from low income families with an emphasis on serving children with disabilities or special needs. Working with children during their formative, preschool years is crucial to helping them develop the foundation for future success.
Our comprehensive services include health, nutrition, and developmental screenings to ensure children enter kindergarten ready and eager to learn. In addition, since parents are their children’s first and most important teachers, family support services and parent trainings are provided to guide parents to be advocates for their children’s education and development.
By assisting with the costs of a Support Aide, the funding from Piedmont United Way is helping Skyline CAP Head Start address the medical or behavioral difficulties of preschool children. It is crucial that these difficulties are attended to as soon as possible to prevent the difficulty from impeding the child’s learning and development. In this way, the work of Skyline CAP Head Start is an investment not only in the children and families we serve but also in the communities where they live.
