FIRST CALL FOR HELP is a program of Piedmont United Way, a Information and Referral (I&R)
service that connects people in need of services or information with providers.
Since 1996 First Call for Help (FCH) has been offering information and referral services to the public
in the counties of Culpeper, Fauquier, Madison, Orange and Rappahannock.
FCH is a program partially funded and housed by the Piedmont United Way, additional funding is through
the Virginia Department of Social Services.
In every community there is a need for a source of information, a facility or entity where the general
public can call to learn about other services, not emergency services, but regular services not
mentioned in the phone directory. For example, where does an elderly person call for transportation
to get to medical services if they no longer drive? Does a battered woman know that SAFE (Services
to Abused Families) exists or for that matter how to contact SAFE? For literacy services, childcare,
legal advice, where does a person in need call for information to connect them with the needed service?
In the past 18 months First Call for Help has expanded its database to
include not just local United Way supported programs and services, but
also local programs and services with no direct
link to United Way. Working with the belief that how we best serve the
community in need as being more important that just providing linkage
to certain services has increased public awareness of
First Call for Help. In 2004 First Call for Help had been linked to the
development of several new regional projects that serve the same counties
as Piedmont United Way/First Call for Help. First Call for Help is part of the VA 2-1-1 system.
Call 2-1-1 and ask to be connected to First Call for Help in Culpeper.
