From the earliest days of the United States, the spirit of volunteer service has been reflected in neighbors helping neighbors to overcome obstacles and make their communities better. Individuals, families and organizations volunteer for a variety of reasons and volunteers span all age groups and backgrounds. Volunteering provides people with a way to come together to reconnect society and alleviate many of our social problems.
Volunteers, in giving their time and talent, laugh more, smile more, and realize a sense of fulfillment. People volunteer to meet new people, explore a new hobby, learn more about their community, make their community a better place, become a role model for kids, achieve personal growth, gain job experience, share their expertise, use their talent and skills, develop new skills, or JUST HAVE FUN.
There are an almost endless number of ways you can contribute in your community. You can help in a community agency or program once, daily, weekly, monthly, or just a few times a year. You can be a tutor/mentor to a child.teach someone to read or a second language.help children and adults with disabilities.feed and shelter the homeless.serve on community boards.preserve the environment.care for animals.plan and participate in special community events.care for the sick.respond to emergencies and disasters.run an office.be a friend to someone who needs one.and SO MUCH MORE.
Consider your motivation to volunteer. This will help you decide the type of work that suits your needs and the amount of time and effort you can provide. Are you seeking personal or professional growth? Do you want to help children, families or seniors improve their lives? Do you simply want to make a difference in your community? Or is your motivation a combination of all of these or for other reasons. Knowing what you want from the experience will make it easier to select an opportunity that will make a difference in your life and the people you help.
